2010 Composer's Symposium Preview
March 28 - March 31, 2010
The 2010 UNM John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium is scheduled from Sunday, March 28, through Wednesday, March 31, and features Martin Bresnick, Professor of Composition at Yale University, winner of numerous prizes and commissions (Fulbright, Rome Prize, Guggenheim, Berlin Prize, Koussevitsky Commission), and elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006.
His music will be performed by members of the UNM faculty as well as by guest performers including Lisa Moore, "New York's Queen of Avant-Garde piano" according to The New Yorker magazine, and founding pianist for the Bang-On-A-Can All Stars; and the Iridium Saxophone Quartet featuring UNM faculty member Eric Lau.
As usual, Monday will include music by John Donald Robb, performed by pianist Tatiana Vetrinskaya and baritone, Javier Ortiz.
Tuesday afternoon will feature a new collaborative work by composer/guitarist William Fowler Collins and video artist Claudia X. Valdes, member of the UNM Art department.
New Music Wednesday will feature two young artists from New York City: composer/pianist Noam Sivan and composer/guitarist Lily Maase, whose band Suite Unraveling will also present a concert at the Outpost Performance Space on Thursday April 1.
The opening concert, once again in collaboration with the Outpost Performance Space (Sunday March 28, 7:30 PM), will feature legendary guitarist Bill Frisell and Albuquerque's own Rahim Alhaj. They will also perform on the Monday evening concert at UNM. The usual complement of outstanding New Mexico composers and UNM faculty will be featured throughout the event. Ticket information for both Frisell/Alhaj and Maase is available by contacting the Outpost directly at 268-0044 or online at outpostspace.org.
Except for the Outpost concerts, all evening performances and daytime activities are free and open to the public.
